Need a decision, but clients don't have the resources or time to wait for a trial? Consider Family Law Arbitration (website with advantages, FAQs, Directory, and Calendar) Phone and video arbitration available
FamilyCounsel.ca has reached 500 verified lawyers! Thank you to everyone who has supported and contributed to this project! Just a reminder, any verified lawyer can post news or upload to the downloads page, so I encourage you to all consider contributing.
Thank you to everyone who responded to the Future Features Survey so far. The poll is still open, so you're welcome to tell me what you'd like to see next.
So far the most requested feature is a Matrimonial Property Statement tool. Many people also requested a way for clients to fill out their assets & debts online, and a simple tax calculator. I'm pleased to say that I've been working on all three. The tax calculator is complete other than needing to investigate one more adjustment. I built it first because it will be the engine that powers the tax calculations in the Matrimonial Property Statement tool, which is about 40% complete. I've also been working on an intake form to enter assets and debts, which is about 30% complete. The idea is that you'll be able to send clients a link so that they can enter in their information, and then their lawyers will automatically be able to convert it into a Schedule A to FL-17 and it'll be the starting point for a Matrimonial Property Statement. As with my other projects, I intend to make it very user-friendly, but I'll probably still host training sessions. That website will be called FamilyClient.ca
The second most-requested feature so far is a tool to calculate parenting time, to determine whether the 40% threshold is met. I haven't started on this yet, but now that I know it would be helpful, it's definitely going to be a priority after the above project.
So far there's also a lot of interest in a roster of family law lawyers who can be contacted for advice, a chat board where family law lawyers can interact with experts, and a way for clients to fill out their budgets online.
I also wanted to thank you, Ken, for creating this amazing resource. It has been incredibly helpful to me, both in finding answers to unusual issues but also in just a general sense of learning new things or addressing my mind to some of the challenges faced by others, that may not have otherwise occurred to me. It also contributes towards a feeling of a colleagial bar, particularly now when we are all socially distanced! I'd also like to give a "shout out" to all of the senior practitioners who regularly contribute and give of their much in demand time to help out more junior counsel. Your contributions are appreciated!
