Bill: 28, the Family Statutes Amendment Act, received royal assent yesterday, December 11, 2018.

I read through the Bill back when it went through first reading. My comments can be found here: http://familycounsel.ca/news.php?id=460

This means we have a year to really get the word out there that people should sign pre-nups and cohabitation agreements if they don't want to operate under the new legislation.

How will it be implemented? (1) does it apply to anyone who is a AIP as of Jan 1, 2020? (2) Anyone who starts a relationship after January 1, 2020 that eventually becomes a AIP? (3) Anyone who is in a relationship but not yet an AIP on Jan 1, 2020 but becomes AIP after Jan 1, 2020? (4) Anyone who is married before Jan 1 2020, was an AIP before marriage, and doesn't have a pre/post nup? (5) some other circumstance I haven't thought of?

I just spoke to an editor of the Legislative Counsel of Alberta Justice to find out if we need to start updating agreements, I'll post a separate announcement answering all these questions today.
