The Alberta Branch of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts (AFCC) has established an ad hoc Board Committee on Parenting Coordination tasked with coordinating a Provincial Working Group on Parenting Coordination with the overarching goal of advancing the practice of Parenting Coordination (PC) in Alberta. Key to the initiative underway is to consult widely across the province with all PC stakeholders. To this end, we have planned a series of steps to gather opinions and facilitate discussion on the burning issues, hoping to identify options with broad support for advancing PC in the province.

A first step is a SURVEY on PC in Alberta to gather input on several important topics from the professional communities who are invested in or have an interest in PC, including of course, Family Lawyers and Mental Health Professionals working with families post-separation.

This Survey should take roughly 25 minutes to complete. You will note that it may be possible to rush through the Survey in less time, but we hope many of you will take advantage of the opportunities to comment – and we very much look forward to your comments! All responses will be anonymous.

Please note that we are also planning a series of Zoom Focus Groups in April/May following the Survey to further discuss key issues arising from the Survey, and then an all-day Zoom Workshop on PC tentatively scheduled for June 3, 2022.

We very much hope all Family Lawyers working on parenting disputes will be willing to take the Survey and provide us with your important feedback.

Many thanks in advance for your time and contributions to this initiative. Your input is greatly valued!

The survey link will close at the end of day on Sunday March 20, 2022.

Hello All - we have extended the deadline to complete the Parenting Coordination Survey by one week to SUNDAY, MARCH 27th. So - if you haven't had the chance to complete it - please opine!

Again -- your input is GREATLY appreciated. We are trying to get input from a broad cross-section of Family Lawyers, Mental Health Professionals and any others who work on high conflict Parenting cases (you need not be a member of AFCC or a Parenting Coordinator to do the Survey).

There are so many challenging issues with Parenting Coordination - not the least of which is the biggy -- whether PC should remain an entirely private voluntary process under the Arbitration Act OR if there is pathway to advancing PC practice as a Court-adjunct service as it was originally conceived. And while this second pathway is so much easier with PC legislation as we have seen in BC, Saskatchewan and PEI, there are other avenues which might open some doors.

My take away from the comments of the Hon. Justice Sheilagh Martin, the Hon. Justice Mary Moreau and Pat Blocksom QC at the AFCC Alberta Conference on March 4th was that the time has come to think outside the box and aspire to transformational change in the Family Justice system!
