Personality disorders are stable patterns of thinking and interacting that negatively impact the person's ability to have healthy relationships. Personality disordered individuals tend to have unstable and often volatile relationships, and correspondingly, are at increased risk for involvement with social services and family courts. This presentation will briefly describe the characteristics and etiology of the three clusters of personality disorders with a focus on those most likely to be problematic for family law practitioners. Recommendations for working with personality disordered individuals will be discussed.
