Private Arbitration of Family disputes is slowly gaining ground in the Edmonton area as an alternative to Court. We will explore why the Edmonton Bar (and Family law litigants) have been slow to embrace the flexibility and cost-efficiency of Arbitration to follow in the footsteps of the Family Bar in Calgary (Toronto, and other major centres). With a growing number of trained and qualified Arbitrators in the greater Edmonton area, Med-Arb and Arbitration have become an accessible and arguably appropriate alternative dispute resolution option. Michele Reeves of Attia Reeves in Edmonton and Wayne Barkauskas of Wise Scheible Barkauskas in Calgary will provide an overview of the Arbitration and Med-Arb experience in the Edmonton area, what we can learn from the Calgary experience, real-talk about the costs, and tips for those considering Arbitration on their files.
