Canada is experiencing an epidemic of family violence. Approximately half of couples who separate report that there has been physical violence at least once during their relationship, and 75% report emotional abuse. It is estimated that the cost of family violence is 7.4 billion dollars annually and that up to 9 in 10 women who experience physical intimate partner violence will suffer a brain injury from the abuse. Despite the seriousness and prevalence of family violence, numerous reports have called out the justice system, and family law lawyers in particular, for failing to promote the safety of survivors and indeed, putting them at further risk. Lawyers must promote the safety and well-being of victims of family violence as a matter of professional competence and to help prevent homicide, suicide, and adverse health outcomes.
